 Ingredients

For the Cake (3 layers)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt

Chaos Mix-Ins (fold into batter)

  • ½ cup crushed Oreos
  • ½ cup mini marshmallows
  • ½ cup white chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • ½ cup holiday sprinkles (red & green)

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 200g cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 cup butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Salted Caramel

  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • Pinch of flaky sea salt

 Instructions

1. Bake the Cake Layers

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F and grease three 8-inch pans.
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, spices, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla — mix until smooth.
  4. Fold in the “chaos mix-ins.” Do not overmix.
  5. Divide batter into pans and bake 25–30 minutes.
  6. Let cool fully.

2. Make Frostings

Cream Cheese Frosting

Beat butter + cream cheese → add sugar gradually → add vanilla.

Buttercream

Beat butter until fluffy → add sugar slowly → add milk + vanilla.

Tip: Chill frostings 10 minutes for perfect spreading.

3. Assemble Your Chaos Cake

  1. Place first cake layer
  2. Spread cream cheese frosting
  3. Drizzle caramel + sprinkles
  4. Add second cake layer
  5. Spread buttercream
  6. Add marshmallows + chocolate chips
  7. Add final cake layer
  8. Frost entire cake with buttercream

  • Caramel drip around edges
  • Crushed candy canes
  • Gold sprinkles
  • Cranberries + rosemary
  • Mini marshmallows on top
