Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients:

1½ lbs ground beef

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 cups milk, divided

¼ cup all-purpose flour

4–5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions:

Preheat oven: Set to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Make the patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 6 patties.

Brown the beef: In a skillet over medium heat, sear the patties on both sides until browned, but not fully cooked through. Set aside.

Make the gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and the flour until smooth. Slowly whisk in the remaining 1 cup milk. Cook and stir until a creamy gravy forms. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Layer the casserole: Place half the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the sliced onions. Arrange the browned beef patties over this layer.

Add remaining layers: Top the patties with the remaining potatoes and onions. Pour the prepared gravy evenly over everything.

Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.

Add cheese and finish baking: Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven uncovered for 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes:

For a sharper flavor, swap in sharp cheddar cheese.

Slice potatoes thinly and evenly to ensure they cook through.

Let rest 5 minutes before serving for easier slicing.

Add sautéed mushrooms or peas for extra texture and flavor.
