Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy – Classic Comfort Food Done Right

Looking for a hearty, flavorful, and satisfying meal that feels like a warm hug on a plate? This Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy is a timeless dish that’s perfect for weeknight dinners, family gatherings, or anytime you’re craving something rich and comforting.

Made with seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savory mushroom gravy, this dish is incredibly easy to prepare with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. It’s a retro favorite that never goes out of style — and for good reason!

 Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal for juicy patties)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk (adds moisture to the meat mixture)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (adds tang and depth)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for searing the patties)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium if preferred)
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (cremini or button mushrooms work great)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

 Directions

1. Make the Steak Patties

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Use clean hands or a fork to mix everything together until just combined — don’t overmix, or the patties may become dense.

Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 3/4 inch thick. You can also make smaller patties for sliders or a party platter.

2. Sear the Patties

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, until well browned. You’re not cooking them all the way through yet — just creating a flavorful crust.

Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.

3. Make the Mushroom Gravy

Using the same skillet (don’t clean it — those browned bits add flavor!), melt the butter over medium heat. Beef and Pepper Rice Bowl

Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté for about 2 minutes, or until they begin to soften and release moisture.

Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute, stirring frequently, to cook off the raw flour taste.

Slowly whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.

4. Simmer the Patties in Gravy

Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them into the mushroom gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F or 71°C).

Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning if needed.

 Serving Ideas

This dish pairs beautifully with a variety of sides:

  • Creamy mashed potatoes (perfect for soaking up gravy!)
  • Steamed white rice
  • Egg noodles or buttered pasta
  • Roasted or steamed vegetables like green beans, carrots, or peas
  • Warm dinner rolls or crusty bread

 Storage & Meal Prep

Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Freezer: Freeze cooked patties and cooled gravy separately for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
Reheating Tip: Warm over low heat on the stovetop, adding a splash of beef broth if the gravy has thickened too much.

 Recipe Tips & Variations

  • Add a dash of hot sauce or smoked paprika for a spicy kick.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for a pop of flavor.
  • Don’t skip the Dijon mustard — it adds subtle tang and depth to the patties.
