Fried Okra Stuffed with Pepper Jack Cheese – Southern Comfort with a Cheesy Kick!

If you’re a fan of crispy snacks with melty, spicy centers, this recipe is a must-try! These Cheese-Stuffed Fried Okra bites bring together tender okra, bold Pepper Jack cheese, and a crunchy golden coating – perfect as a Southern appetizer, snack, or even a fun side dish.

Ingredients:

  • 20 large fresh okra pods
  • 4 oz Pepper Jack cheese, cut into thin matchstick slices
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

1. Prep the Okra:

Wash and pat dry the okra. Using a small knife, carefully make a slit along the length of each pod, creating a pocket without cutting all the way through.

2. Stuff with Cheese:

Insert a slice of Pepper Jack cheese into each okra pod. Press gently to keep the cheese inside. If needed, trim the cheese sticks to fit perfectly.

3. Set Up Breading Station:

  • In one bowl, pour the buttermilk.
  • In a second bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika.

4. Coat the Okra:

Dip each stuffed okra pod into the buttermilk, then dredge in the dry flour-cornmeal mixture. Press gently to ensure an even coating. For extra crunch, repeat the dipping and dredging.

5. Fry to Perfection:

Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry okra in batches for 3–4 minutes, turning once, until golden brown and crispy. Don’t overcrowd the pan.

6. Drain & Serve:

Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with ranch dressing, spicy aioli, or your favorite dipping sauce.
