Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

Patty Melts with Secret Sauce

Classic patty melts are a delicious combo of juicy burger patties, caramelized onions, and gooey melted cheese, all grilled on toasty bread. The secret sauce adds an extra layer of flavor, making this melt even more irresistible!

Ingredients

For the Patty Melts:

Ground Beef: 1 lb (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio works best)
Seasoning: Salt and pepper to taste
Onion: 1 large, thinly sliced
Butter: 2 tablespoons, divided
Swiss or Cheddar Cheese: 4 slices (or a mix)
Rye or Sourdough Bread: 4 slices

For the Secret Sauce:

Mayonnaise: 1/4 cup
Ketchup: 1 tablespoon
Yellow Mustard: 1 teaspoon
Worcestershire Sauce: 1/2 teaspoon
Garlic Powder: 1/4 teaspoon
Pickle Relish: 1 tablespoon (optional, for a tangy kick)

Directions

Prepare the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and pickle relish. Set aside.

Caramelize the Onions:
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced onions and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and soft. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Make the Patties:
Divide ground beef into two equal parts and shape each into a thin patty that matches the size of your bread slices.
Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.

Cook the Patties:
In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and cook patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.

Assemble the Patty Melts:
Spread a thin layer of secret sauce on each slice of bread.
Place a slice of cheese on each bread slice, top with a patty, add caramelized onions, and cover with the remaining bread slices (sauce side down).

Grill the Patty Melts:
Wipe the skillet clean, add a little butter if needed, and grill each patty melt for 2-3 minutes per side over medium heat, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted.

Serve:
Slice in half, serve with extra sauce on the side, and enjoy!

Tips:

For extra flavor, try using both Swiss and cheddar cheese.
Feel free to add sautéed mushrooms or crispy bacon for a twist.
