Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1 lb ground beef
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Onion Gravy:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Form into 4-5 equal-sized patties.
2. Cook the Patties:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a bit of oil and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook until softened and golden, about 8-10 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring to coat. Cook for 1 minute.
Slowly whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps form. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
4. Combine and Simmer:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy thickens.
5. Serve:
Plate the hamburger steaks and spoon the onion gravy generously over the top. Serve alongside mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
Tips:
Add mushrooms to the gravy for an earthy twist.
For a gluten-free version, use almond flour in the patties and cornstarch to thicken the gravy.
